Athletes 4 Society was an Erasmus+ Sport project in which we partnered, co-funded by the European Union, that explored how elite athletes can act as powerful role models for positive societal change. The project brought together research institutions, sport organisations, and innovation partners from across Europe to strengthen the public value of sport beyond performance and competition.
At the core of the project was the idea that athletes can inspire social impact when their role is structured, supported, and communicated effectively. Athletes 4 Society therefore focused on developing evidence-based tools, shared learning, and practical examples to help sport organisations design, implement, and scale initiatives that leverage athletes for societal goals such as inclusion, integrity, health, and equal opportunities.
The European Athletes 4 Society Challenge
A key outcome of the project was the European Athletes 4 Society Challenge, an open call inviting sport organisations and initiatives across Europe to showcase how athletes were being used as role models for social impact. Ten initiatives from Belgium, Finland, Poland, Portugal, and the Netherlands were selected to participate, addressing themes ranging from human rights and anti-doping to inclusion, education, and mental health.
Participants submitted short videos and infographics explaining their programmes, which were published on an open-access platform. Projects were evaluated through a combination of public voting and expert assessment, stimulating visibility, peer learning, and engagement at European level. The Finnish campaign “Don’t Break the Game” was awarded as the first winner of the Athletes 4 Society Challenge, highlighting the importance of authenticity, strong communication, and well-chosen athlete role models.
Kinetic Analysis’ Role: Work Package 5
Kinetic Analysis was responsible for Work Package 5: Stimulating the Public Value of Sport. Within this role, we led the development of the Athletes 4 Society website, supported the digital infrastructure of the project, and designed and implemented the Athletes 4 Society Challenge as an interactive, European-wide initiative.
Our contribution focused on translating scientific insights into accessible digital formats, enabling public engagement, and ensuring that project outputs were visible, shareable, and sustainable beyond the project’s lifetime. By combining platform design, communication strategy, and evaluation support, Work Package 5 played a central role in connecting research, practice, and society.
Lasting Impact
Athletes 4 Society demonstrated that the societal impact of sport can be strengthened when athletes are supported as role models through structured programmes, clear narratives, and evidence-based frameworks. The project created a growing European network of organisations committed to using sport as a driver for social good, and provided practical tools to help that ambition take shape.
