From Human Motion Data to Breathing Intelligence™: How Kinetic Analysis Helped Build a New Foundation for Respiratory Research
Nearly 10,000 hours of continuous thoracic and abdominal respiratory data captured across 136 people in real-world conditions mark an important milestone in the development of Breathing Intelligence™.
At Kinetic Analysis, we believe that human data can create meaningful opportunities to improve quality of life. Our work focuses on turning advances in sensing technology into practical applications that help us better understand human physiology, health, and performance.
One example of this approach is ATRIDE, a Kinetic Analysis Group company developing the ANASA® Smart Breathing Shirt and its Breathing Intelligence™ platform. ATRIDE has now reached a significant milestone: nearly 10,000 hours of continuous respiratory dynamics recorded across 136 participants in real-world conditions.
For us, this achievement represents more than a dataset. It demonstrates how wearable technology, longitudinal human data, and scientific collaboration can come together to open new possibilities for understanding the human body.

Beyond snapshots: understanding breathing over time
Breathing is one of the body's most fundamental physiological processes. Yet respiratory assessment still relies heavily on measurements taken at specific moments, such as spirometry, clinical examinations, exercise tests, or sleep studies.
These methods remain essential. But they offer only a partial view of how breathing behaves throughout everyday life.
Through the ANASA® Smart Breathing Shirt, ATRIDE continuously measures thoracic and abdominal movement simultaneously and continuously in real-life environments. Its dual-belt sensing architecture captures two complementary dimensions of respiratory mechanics, revealing how the chest and abdomen move in relation to one another.
This distinction matters. Breathing is a coordinated mechanical process, and the relationship between thoracic and abdominal movement may provide information that cannot be obtained from respiratory rate alone.
A single measurement can tell us how often someone breathes. Continuous dual-belt monitoring can help researchers investigate how breathing patterns evolve, how respiratory mechanics respond to changing conditions, and how individual patterns vary over time.
This is the shift that underpins Breathing Intelligence™: moving beyond isolated measurements towards a more contextual understanding of human physiology.
Building a real-world respiratory data foundation
The dataset was generated through the DigiLung project, supported by EISMEA under the European Union's Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) Instrument in which ATRIDE was a key partner.
Nearly 10,000 hours of continuous monitoring across 136 participants represents approximately 70 hours of respiratory data per person. Crucially, these measurements were collected beyond the boundaries of a traditional laboratory setting.
Real-world monitoring allows respiratory dynamics to be explored across different activities and conditions, including walking, sleeping, working, exercising, resting, and recovering.
Physiology is inherently contextual. A breathing pattern observed while sitting quietly may differ considerably from one observed during physical exertion, fatigue, stress, or sleep. Understanding these differences requires more than a snapshot; it requires observing the person over time.
The dataset therefore creates opportunities to investigate questions such as:
How consistent is an individual's respiratory baseline across multiple days?
How does thoracoabdominal coordination change during activity and recovery?
Which variations reflect normal individual differences, and which may warrant further investigation?
How will longitudinal respiratory patterns contribute to the development of digital biomarkers?
How can continuous breathing data support research into respiratory health, rehabilitation, sleep, wellbeing, and human performance?
These are research opportunities rather than established clinical outcomes. Their significance lies in creating the data foundation needed to investigate them systematically.
From sensing technology to Breathing Intelligence™
At Kinetic Analysis, our approach to innovation connects sensing technology, human data, scientific expertise, and application development. The objective is not simply to collect more data, but to make that data meaningful and useful.
ATRIDE's Breathing Intelligence™ platform builds on this principle by aiming to transform continuous respiratory signals into contextualized insights.
A change in breathing mechanics may have different implications depending on the person, the activity, and the environment. Respiratory patterns in someone living with a chronic respiratory condition, for example, need to be interpreted differently from those of an athlete during exertion or an individual recovering from physical activity.
The challenge is therefore to understand not only what changes, but also when it changes, under which conditions, and how that change relates to an individual's usual patterns.
Combining continuous respiratory monitoring with contextual information and analytical methods creates a foundation for investigating personalized respiratory baselines, respiratory phenotyping, digital biomarker development, and predictive modelling.
The long-term opportunity is to move from collecting physiological signals towards understanding the patterns they contain.
Wearable science beyond the laboratory
The ANASA® Smart Breathing Shirt reflects another principle central to Kinetic Analysis: meaningful physiological data should not be limited to specialized testing environments.
Its textile-integrated sensors are designed to capture thoracic and abdominal movement during prolonged monitoring, making continuous respiratory research possible in settings that are difficult to reproduce in a laboratory.
The concept is comparable to the transformation brought about by Holter monitoring in cardiology. Rather than assessing physiology at a single point in time, researchers can observe how it changes across extended periods and within everyday environments.
This approach can complement conventional clinical and laboratory assessments while supporting new forms of longitudinal research.
Potential application areas include respiratory health, rehabilitation, sleep research, wellbeing, sports science, and physically demanding work environments. Each domain presents different questions, requiring its own research protocols, contextual data, and validation.
The same underlying sensing technology can therefore support multiple applications while maintaining a common foundation: continuous observation of human physiology in context.
A Kinetic Analysis approach to innovation
ATRIDE illustrates how Kinetic Analysis translates scientific and technological capabilities into opportunities for real-world impact.
Our work sits at the intersection of human movement, physiological monitoring, data science, and product development. By bringing together expertise in wearable sensing, applied research, and the interpretation of human data, we aim to help promising technologies progress from early-stage innovation towards practical applications.
The development of ATRIDE and the ANASA® Smart Breathing Shirt is part of that broader ambition: creating tools that make human physiology more observable, generate new research opportunities, and ultimately support solutions that improve quality of life.
Nearly 10,000 hours of respiratory data provide a substantial starting point. The next step is to translate this foundation into scientific knowledge, validated analytical approaches, and applications that address real needs.
Exploring the future of continuous respiratory monitoring
Kinetic Analysis and ATRIDE welcome collaboration with universities, research institutions, clinicians, healthcare innovators, sports-science teams, and technology partners interested in continuous respiratory monitoring and Breathing Intelligence™.
Whether the objective is to investigate respiratory dynamics in real-world conditions, develop new research protocols, explore digital biomarkers, or translate wearable respiratory data into new applications, collaboration will be essential to realizing the potential of this technology.
We invite organizations working at the intersection of human data, health, and performance to explore what continuous respiratory monitoring can make possible.
